What are your Future plans?
As a recent graduate of Drexel University's Physician Assistant program, I am currently interviewing for jobs at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Massachusetts.
Why did you choose Shuler's gym?
The choice was easy. The gym has a reputation of producing some of Philadelphia's finest boxers. I did my research online and asked around about which local boxing gyms would help prepare me to compete in the ring, and Shuler's Gym was the name that kept popping up. I decided to stop in and see what it was all about, and from the moment I walked in I felt at home. Shuler's Gym has the perfect training atmosphere- a combination of comradery, intensity, superb coaching staff, and an overwhelming sense of family. The trainers including Buster, Chip, Rob, Marty, Frank, Khalil are all experts in the sport and really make the difference between a good fighter and a great fighter. I knew I made the right choice from the very first day.
How did you find us?
I reached out to a few former Philadelphia fighters that I had meet during my time in graduate school, and they all recommended Shuler's Gym. For me, Shuler's Gym is a place of comfort, a place where I could leave all the stresses of working as a healthcare professional at the door and just focus on training. It was my home away from home and quickly became the best part of my day. If I had to choose a boxing gym all over again, I would choose Shuler's every single time. I highly recommend the gym for anyone looking for amateur or professional boxing training.
How did it feel to fight in Golden Gloves?
Boxing in the Northern New England Golden Gloves (Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine) in my hometown of Burlington, Vermont has been a dream of mine since I watched my brother compete in this tournament over the past few years. It is a regional qualifier to proceed to the New England Golden Gloves in Lowell, MA. Buster and the rest of the Shuler family helped prepare me mentally and physically for it. I could not have had a better training camp leading up to the tournament. I felt very calm, confident, and prepared to enter the ring, which I owe entirely to my time spent at Shuler's. I was given the ring time, the coaching, the rounds, and the sparring to give me the confidence to hop in the ring and fight my fight. It was all second nature at that point. My Jab was single highhandedly my best tool in each of my fights, which is something we worked on day in and day out. Buster always said you could control a fight with a good jab, and I did just that. I could not have done this without the entire Shuler gym and family.
Was the one fight what you trained for?
From the very first day of training, Buster and I committed to the goal of winning the 152 lbs novice class in the 2016 New England Golden Gloves. This requires advancing from the regional tournament in Burlington, Vermont to fight other New England regional winners in Lowell, MA. Currently, I will fight in the regional championship Saturday, February 6th.
What was most helpful about training with Buster at Shuler's?
I was a former collegiate hockey player, and I have been dedicated to athletics my entire life. I've never had the level of coaching both in and out of the ring that I received from Buster. His passion and experience for the sport of boxing is beyond anything I have ever seen in my life. He shaped me mentally and physically me into a boxer and taught me life skills along the way. Training with him not only made me a great boxer, but it made me mentally stronger, and a more determined individual outside of the ring and which has helped me tremendously in my healthcare career. I'm very fortunate and am forever grateful for my time with Buster and the rest of Shuler's Gym. I'm proud to call Buster and the rest of the gym members my family.
Buster took myself and my brother into his family. He exposed me to boxing legends and made me part of his team of fighters. To be associated with Buster's past and present team of great fighters including Antonio Dubose, Rasheen Brown, Chris Jones, and Dafhir Smith was an honor and really helped me push myself to limit.
The friendships that I had made with the other fighters in Shuler's gym are priceless. To share the ring with these great boxers is truly an honor and a very humbling experience. I cannot say enough about Busters training, and all of the other integral parts of Shuler's Gym. They are the best in the business.
CONGRATULATIONS PATRICK! WE ARE LOOKING TO MEET YOU AT THE END OF THE TOURNAMENT WITH THE WIN!
ONLY A GOOD PUPIL AND SOMEONE WITH THE DETERMINATION YOU ATTAIN COULD HAVE ACCOMPLISHED WHAT YOU HAVE IN 6 MONTHS! WE ARE SO PROUD TO HAVE YOU AS NEW GYM FAMILY MEMBER! WELL WISHES ON YOUR FUTURE ENDEAVORS.
